Facts and Information about the Trapdoor Spider
Trapdoor spiders are mygalomorph spiders of a medium size that build a burrow with a trapdoor made of soil, vegetation and spider silk. Some species such as the Conothele do not build burrows, they create a silk tube with a trap door in bark crevices. When the trap door is closed it is very difficult to see, this is because it is made from soil and materials around the hole creating camouflage. The trap door, on one side is hinged with silk. Trapdoor spiders are normally nocturnal, they will normally wait for prey, holding on to the underside of the door with its claws on their tarsi. The Trapdoor spiders prey is captured when its prey wonders to close to the hole where the spider will feel the vibrations along trip lines set outside and around the hole. When the prey is within distance, the spider will leap out and capture the passing insect.
A hungry trapdoor spider may wait halfway outside its burrow for a meal. A female will not travel far from her borrow, especially if she has an egg sac, if there are spiderlings she will capture and eat her prey, then regurgitate it to feed the young.
The spider wasp is the trapdoor spiders greatest enemy, the spider wasp will seek out the burrows and gain entry where it will sting the spider, paralyzing it, then laying its eggs on the spiders body were they will hatch and eat the spider alive.
Ctenizidae spiders have a rastellum on their chelicera unlike other mygalomorph spiders. The barbs on each fang that resemble teeth, are a modification used to dig and gather soil when constructing a burrow. The Trapdoor spider will use its pedipalps and its first legs to hold the trapdoor closed if and when disturbed.
