History of Spiders in California
Most of the spiders found in California are
foreign invaders, with some of the largest populations
having come from South America, the Mediterranean
regions, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

There are
thousands of different types of spiders in California,
with the most common ones including, tarantulas, grass
spiders, calisoga spiders, daddy long legs, sow-bug
killers, American house spiders, black widow spiders,
wolf spiders, garden spiders and jumping spiders.
Geography

Spiders
can live and thrive in many different habitats, such as
the calisoga spider that like the dry Oakland hills
regions, other spiders can only be found under wood or
bark were others can only be found in urban areas.
Spiders such as tarantulas can be found when people are
digging up there gardens as tarantulas like to burrow
underground. Spiders such as the grass spider, likes to
spin its web on fence posts and street signs.

Most bites
from spiders in California may be unpleasant, specially
from jumping spiders, hobo spiders, wolf spiders and
tarantulas, the only spider in California that posses a
real danger is the Black Widow spider that has medically
significant venom. Black Widow spiders can be a nuisance
as they like to live in dark place such as closets,
attics and garages. The Black Widow spider can be found
in all parts of California, they especially like the
warmer regions of the state. It has been reported that
it has been over a decade since someone has died from a
Black Widow spider bite, this may be due to physicians
having highly effective ways of treating bite victims.
The elderly and young children are more at risk from
black widow spiders where as a healthy person is less at
risk.
If someone is believed to have been bite by a Black
Widow spider, medical help should be sought after. |
