Many people find keeping and raising spiders as pets very interesting and enjoyable. As long as proper and suitable living conditions are supplied, spiders and insects can be well looked after as pets. There are many, many types of spiders with some such as tarantulas and wolf spiders that make exceptional pets, as it can be very interesting to observe them.

Advantages to raising pet spiders

• They are quiet and clean pets.

• They only require a small home such as a terrarium.
• Spiders as pets can be fascinating and interesting to observe.
• They require pretty much no socializing with other spiders.
• They are much cheaper to keep than most pets such as cats and dogs.
• Depending on where you live, you may be able to catch a spider to keep as a pet.
• Any pet can serve as a tool for any child to learn responsibility and with a spider, perhaps an interest in nature.

Disadvantages to raising a pet spider

• All spiders are venomous, so this must be considered when caring for a spider. Does the carer have a week immune system, are they allergic to stings?

• Tarantulas in particular, while they have a mildly venomous bite, they also have urticating hairs, these can be rubbed of their abdomen with their hind legs in order to release the fine hairs that are a sever irritant to the skin and mucus membranes and cause vision damage if they enter the eye.

• Spiders are very solitary creatures and cannot be handled by humans, let alone being introduced to other pets such as cats and dogs, this could result in either a dead spider or seriously ill or even dead cat or dog. If a tarantula was to be held and accidentally dropped, this may cause their abdomen to rupture resulting in almost certain death.

• Laws and regulations may restricted the purchase or possession of some all maybe all types of spiders.
• Some liability insurance covers may not cover you for an injury sustained from a pet spider bite leaving you legally responsible. 

Raising a spider as a cool pet can be irresponsible, all pets require a high level of commitment, dedication and respect in order to up hold the life and well being of the animal you have chosen to become responsible for.
